Dance/rap duo Cartel Madras is comprised of sisters Eboshi and Contra who were both born in Chennai in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and raised in Calgary, Canada. Like their upbringing, their music is a cultural syncretism; a heady mix of trap with punk, house, South Indian aesthetics, as well as queer and immigrant references, all of which they’ve labeled “goonda rap”. Landing their first record deal, their second EP was released on Sub Pop. Out now is new song and video 'WORKING', and it's an absolute banger. The sisters' gold-standard rap matches the bling they wear in the music video, whilst the classic deep house synth slowly deepens like the blacks of dilated pupils. Packed with sofa-loving dopamine, the track remains fairly mellow until the last minute, whereby synths chords rise, arpeggiators bubble and hi-hat hammers energetically, rounding the tune off into euphoria.
